Coded Bias Film Screening & Discussion

Join the WEST community for a virtual screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary Coded Bias, a powerful exploration of artificial intelligence, algorithmic bias, and the societal impact of emerging technologies.

Participants will receive access to the film between July 21–28 and can watch it at their convenience. Following the viewing period, we'll come together for an engaging virtual discussion, where we'll examine the film's key themes and their implications for STEM professionals, organizations, and society.

About Coded Bias

When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition systems struggle to accurately identify women and people with darker skin tones, she embarks on a journey to uncover the broader implications of bias in artificial intelligence.

Her investigation reveals that AI systems are not inherently neutral and often reflect the biases of the data and people that create them. Determined to drive change, Buolamwini founds the Algorithmic Justice League and becomes a leading advocate for greater transparency, accountability, and regulation in AI technologies.

Centering the voices of women at the forefront of this movement, Coded Bias examines how artificial intelligence increasingly influences our daily lives and asks critical questions about fairness, civil liberties, and the future of technology.

Whether you're an AI practitioner, technology leader, researcher, or simply curious about the societal impact of emerging technologies, this event will provide valuable insights and meaningful discussion.
