FROM THE SUBWAY

Whitehead Institute is located on the Red Line subway system at the Kendall Square/MIT stop. Exit the T station and walk away from Boston (away from the river) on Main Street. The Whitehead Institute is two blocks up on the right, at the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way. 


DRIVING DIRECTIONS
The Whitehead Institute is located in Kendall Square on the corner of Main St. and Galileo Galilei Way, next to the Broad Institute. There are multiple parking options; please see below.

From the Massachusetts Turnpike

Exit left at exit 18, Cambridge/Allston. Bear right off exit towards Cambridge. Go over bridge and take a right onto Memorial Drive. Immediately after passing the Hyatt Hotel on your left, take a left at the light. At the end of the street, take a right onto Vassar Street. Continue straight down Vassar, through the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue, about one mile total. Vassar intersects Main Street. Whitehead is ahead diagonally on your right, at the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way. Please see the information on Parking below.

  
From the South
Exit right off Route 93 at the Storrow Drive exit. Once on Storrow Drive, exit left at the Kendall Square exit. At traffic light take a right onto the Longfellow Bridge. Follow Main Street (Main flows into Broadway) and take a left at the second set of lights (Ames Street). You will see the Whitehead Institute, which is on the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way, at a slight distance on your right. Please see the information on Parking below.

From the North
From Route 93, take exit 26, Leverett Circle/Cambridge. Follow signs for Route 28 North and Cambridge. Move into the middle or left lane and take a left, following signs for Cambridge and the Museum of Science. Take a right and continue until the second light (you will pass the Museum of Science on the left). Take a left (this is Edwin Land Boulevard but the road is not marked at this intersection). Continue on this road (Galleria Mall will be on your right), passing through one light until you see a sign for Kendall Square. Take a right onto Binney Street. Continue on Binney until you reach the third set of lights at the intersection of Broadway. Take a left onto Broadway. Take the next right (Ames Street). You will see the Whitehead Institute, which is on the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way, at a slight distance on your right. Please see the information on Parking below.

 

From Logan Airport

Take Sumner Tunnel to 93 North. Exit right off 93 at the Cambridge/Storrow Drive exit. When the ramp splits, bear right following signs to Storrow Drive. Exit left at the Kendall Square exit. At traffic light take a right onto the Longfellow Bridge. Follow Main Street (Main flows into Broadway) and take a left at the second set of lights (Ames St.). You will see the Whitehead Institute, which is on the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way, at a slight distance on your right. Please see the information on Parking below.

 

Parking

Parking is not available in the Whitehead Institute building. There is limited street parking near the building (meters, free after 6pm) on Main St., Ames St., and Vassar St.  In addition, MIT parking lots are free after 5pm.

 

There are three Central Parking facilities located near the Whitehead Institute.  The garages located at 10 Cambridge Center (north of the Whitehead on Galileo Galilei Way) and 7 Cambridge Center (on the east side of Ames St. between Broadway and Main) have an evening rate of $7 from 6-11pm.  The closest garage at 4 Cambridge Center (corner of Main and Ames Streets) does not have an evening rate, and costs $8 for 1 hour, $17 for 1-3 hrs., and $23 for 3-24 hrs.  Rates are as of Feb. 2010 and are subject to change.

Taking public transportation to Whitehead Institute

Whitehead Institute is located on the Red Line subway system at the Kendall Square/MIT stop. Exit the T station and walk away from Boston (away from the river) on Main Street. The Whitehead Institute is two blocks up on the right, at the corner of Main Street and Galileo Galilei Way.

Public parking

Parking is not available at Whitehead Institute. There are three public parking facilities located close to the main building of the Whitehead Institute. One is behind Nine Cambridge Center, with entrances off Galileo Galilei Way and Ames Street. The second is on Broadway between Galileo Galilei Way and Ames Street. The third is on Ames Street between Broadway and Main Street. They are indicated on the map by a “P.”

Parking also is available at 500 Technology Square. To access that garage, continue on Main Street away from Kendall Square, take a right onto Portland Street. Take Portland Street to the next intersection and take a right onto Broadway. The entrance to Technology Square and the parking garage will be on your right. The Technology Square garage is the second garage on the right.
