Strategic Leadership'HERDING CATS: STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY' WORKSHOP Tuesday, July 6, 2010 5:30pm-9:00pm Register at the door
Being an effective leader is difficult, but trying to manage smart, technically trained individuals can be even very challenging. They often know more than their bosses, there are few metrics to measure their progress, they don’t like being told what to do, and it’s often difficult to know when they’re being productive or not.
This interactive, participatory workshop will provide you with practical tips on how to effectively manage scientists and engineers. You will gain a basic understanding of what types of leadership approaches work, and which don’t, as well as the reasons why. Whether you are technically trained yourself and are now in a leadership role, or if you are decidedly not a geek, but have to work with these notoriously difficult folks, this workshop will provide you with insight and useful tools that you can put into practice immediately. Gwen Acton Ph.D. is President of Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (WEST), and CEO and founder of Vivo Group, a strategic consulting firm specializing in improving the productivity and innovation of scientists and other highly trained knowledge workers. Prior to this, Dr. Acton ran the operations of the $40 million, 50-person Functional Genomics Program at the Whitehead Institute/M.I.T. Center for Genome Research for five years. She also served as a faculty member at Harvard University in the department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Dr. Acton received a doctorate in molecular biology and genetics from M.I.T. in 1991. Dr. Acton was a freelance journalist for the Associated Press, is an experienced public speaker, and is the author the book The Bluffers Guide to Genetics recently published by Oval Press.
