Get to know the WEST members:
Georgia Mitsi, PhD, MBA, MSc, is the Founder and CEO of Apptomics LLC a health technology niche firm specializing in the design and validation of quality medical mobile applications for selected conditions with high unmet need focusing primarily in CNS. Georgia received her PhD in Health Sciences and MSc in Applied Medical Sciences from University of Patras, Greece and her MBA from University of Miami. She has extensive experience in Pharmaceutical Industry and Healthcare Consulting where she has been involved in positions of increased responsibility in areas such as Clinical Research, Health Outcomes and Health Economics. She often played an instrumental role in uncovering and fostering new business opportunities and developing a strategic roadmap for product’s value proposition.
Georgia also worked at the Health Services Research Center (HSRC) that was a joint venture between Humana and University of Miami and among other responsibilities she led the scientific effort for the Games for Health initiative.
She has completed successfully many research projects of high complexity and has collaborated with pharmaceutical companies as well as academic institutions. She has co-authored several scientific publications and presented in conferences such as ISPOR and DIA. Georgia is also a published author in her native language, Greek. Connie Jeffery grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, and obtained a B.S. in biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley. While a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Brandeis University she learned macromolecular X-ray crystallography. She is currently an associate professor of biological sciences and an adjunct professor of bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Jeffery lab uses biophysical and biochemical methods along with computer-based structure analysis (bioinformatics) to study the connections between the sequences, structures, and functions of proteins. The genome projects yielded the sequences of tens of thousands of proteins. Elucidating the roles these proteins play in health and disease, and also how they can be used and/or modified for the development of novel therapeutics, biomaterials, biosensors, energy production and environmental remediation, will be aided by a better understanding of how a protein’s amino acid sequence determines its structure and how structure determines function. In one project, lab members solved six X-ray crystal structures of the moonlighting protein phosphoglucose isomerase/autocrine motility factor (PGI/AMF) with different ligands bound and developed a detailed model of the multistep catalytic mechanism for this multifunctional enzyme/growth factor. The lab is currently involved in the development of improved technologies for membrane protein expression and purification and novel technologies for identifying ligands and ligand binding sites for proteins. Connie also developed the idea/concept of moonlighting proteins, and wrote several articles describing examples of moonlighting proteins from the literature, their methods to switch between functions, possible methods of evolution, and potential benefits to cells.
Connie has won grants and/or other awards from the Society for Biomolecular Sciences, NSF, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the UIC Campus Research Board. She is an editor of the journal Nano-Reviews, a co-organizer of the annual Midwest Protein Folding meeting, and a volunteer mentor for women in science through three mentoring programs: AWIS mentor circles, the New York Academy of Sciences and U.S. Department of State NeXXt Scholars Program, and Graduate Women at MIT (GWAMIT). She is also a member of the Biophysical Society, the Protein Society and Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in her laboratory she has served as a research mentor for under-represented minority students through the UIC Summer Research Opportunities Program. She currently splits her time between Chicago, where her job is and the Boston area, where her husband works.
Karen West is currently at home job searching and working on her own projects using GNU Tools, C, C++, and more recently, Python. In her 18 years of professional experience, she has successfully developed/tested many embedded software/hardware projects in local area networks/communications, satellite TV, USB products, core home-gateways, all-in-one printer/scanner/copier fax machines, multimedia infotainment systems, and US Navy missile defense systems. Additionally, while pursuing her MS degree, she did some project work in the areas of operating systems, distributed systems, graphics, databases, robotics, computer architecture, digital electronics design and carrier grade networks and communication.
In terms of adventures, experiences, and travel, here are a few places and things: England (her children's father's home country), Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland, and Portugal, Canada and Caribbean islands. She comes from Albany, NY, but they mostly visit San Francisco, CA or Ann Arbor, MI these days, but also Florida for awhile too. In past lives, she has done things such as run the Boston Marathon, climb every mountain in the northeast and surrounding Canadian borders, and attend every rock/roll/pop concert she could. She has 2 kids, a girl aged 7, and a boy aged 9, and life mostly revolves around their adventures at the moment!
Elizabeth Levy, Counsel for Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, provides general legal support for her division with an emphasis on commercial, antitrust, contract, regulatory and compliance matters. She is co-chair of her division's New England chapter of its Women’s Information Network @ Siemens (WIN@S), co-chair of her division's Diversity Council and a member of Siemens Healthcare’s Diversity Council.
Ms. Levy began her legal career as a patent agent while attending law school at night, having worked as an engineer for 8 years. She obtained her J.D. with honors from Suffolk University Law School and her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with honors from the University of Texas. She practiced intellectual property law at three firms and was a partner at two, including McDermott Will & Emery LLC. She holds two United States patents for inventions in the field of incandescent lamps.
Ms. Levy has been active in the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL,www.nawl.org) since 2007, serving on its annual General Counsel Institute (GCI) and Midyear Meeting planning committees and as a mentor in the NAWL Mentoring program. Ms. Levy chaired NAWL’s 2011 GCI and chairs the sponsorship committee for NAWL’s 2012 GCI. She also serves on a NAWL Regional GCI exploratory committee and will moderate a panel of women general counsels at the 2012 GCI.
Ms. Levy’s unusual career path was featured in Siemens’ “Exotic Bird” series (April 2012; https://newscenter.siemens.com/siemens-news/?webcode=40000423). She is profiled in Power and Influence for Lawyers: How To Use It To Develop Business and Advance Your Career (S. Letterman White, West/Thomson Reuters 2011). She was a panelist in Suffolk University Law School’s Legal Education and Practice Program (LEAPP) in the 2011-2012 academic year. She co-chaired Suffolk University Law School’s first Corporate Counsel Institute held on Sept 14, 2012 and moderated a panel of executives, focusing on their perspectives of what they want in a legal business partner. She was profiled in the September 2012 issue of Corporate Counsel magazine in an article on women in-house lawyers and their options for advancement. She is a member of WEST and is a Cohort Leader in WEST’s inaugural Leading For Impact program.
Kelsey McCormick, M.S., Founder and Principal Consultant of McCormick LifeScience Consultants, LLC, has been in the Pharmaceutical industry for 13 years. In 2000, Kelsey earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in Veterinary Medicine from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. She then initiated her professional career in the Discovery Biology group at Bristol-Myers Squibb Medical Imaging (BMS-MI) in North Billerica, MA as an in vivo pharmacologist. She concentrated in areas of Oncology and Cardiology (study planning, study implementation, data compilation, and protocol/report drafting). In 2003, Kelsey obtained her Master's of Science degree in Regulatory Affairs from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston, MA. In addition to her role as an in vivo pharmacologist, Kelsey became the liaison between the Discovery Biology group and the Regulatory Affairs group at BMS-MI. Included in her job functions were drafting, reviewing, and coordinating the Nonclinical portions of all BMS-MI internal documentation and Regulatory submissions. Kelsey also assisted other functional groups in the Regulatory submission process.
With this experience, the urge to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and her “bite” by the “entrepreneurial bug,” in early 2007, Kelsey formed McCormick LifeScience Consultants, LLC (www.mccormicklifescience.com), MLC, LLC, a Massachusetts-based consulting company providing consulting/contract services to pharmaceutical/biotech/medical device companies. We support most functions, including, but not limited to, Non-Clinical, Clinical, CMC, Regulatory, and Quality. MLC, LLC assists with short-term consulting projects, as well as long-term contracts, on- or off-site, depending on the client’s specific needs.
Kelsey remains closely involved with her client projects and spends much of her time managing the business, networking/marketing and with business development efforts.
